George Omerly

George Geiger Omerly was born on July 9, 1896, the son of George and Mary Omerly, an affluent Philadelphia couple. He had two elder siblings, Caroline and Francis. The elder George Omerly was the President of the Hancock Grain Company, a staunch Episcopalian, and a descendant of Philadelphia's finest families. Caroline, Francis and George, most likely had a pleasantly privileged childhood. George began to attend Camp Awosting in 1909. Photographs show George to be a slight, wiry, straw-haired lad, who actively participated in camp activities. George attended Camp Awosting for several years. By 1930, George G. Omerly Jr. was married with three children: Robert (age four), Margaret (age two) and baby George (aged just one month). The Omerlies were still living in Philadelphia, when George, at the age of 45, filled out a WWII draft card in 1942. The Omerly family eventually migrated to Santa Barbara, CA. George G. Omerly died in sunny Santa Barbara on January 31, 1989. He was 92 years old.
