Renewal and Rebirth, 1965-1980
In the late 1960s, Urban Renewal destroyed the entire east side of Broadway and most of Rondout’s businesses. The aging Rehers limited their hours to Sundays and focused on city-wide and summer camp deliveries. In 1981, they closed the business and retired to their apartment upstairs. Before his death in 2004, Hyman Reher deeded the property to the Jewish Federation of Ulster County, which has worked to preserve and research the site in order to transform it into a museum and community center.
