Works of Art
In addition to The Rondout Bridge (shown in the previous section), the HHS Permanent Collection preserves several works by Emily DuBois Hoysradt. The first one below depicts some furnishing items that Emily donated to the museum, as well. The mantel clock is said to have been passed down from Emily’s maternal great-grandfather, Josiah Bruyn DuBois, who ran a mercantile business, in partnership with Josiah Hasbrouck, at the house we now call the Jean Hasbrouck House. In 1822, Josiah Bruyn DuBois built a Federal-style brick home in Libertyville, west of the Wallkill River. There he lived with his second wife, Catherine Winfield (Emily’s great-grandmother), and raised his family.

This watercolor by Emily DuBois Hoysradt depicts an interior with furnishings, probably at her home in Kingston on West Chester Street. Several of the items depicted are antiques Emily donated to the Historic Huguenot Street Permanent Collection, including the mantel clock, armchair, and candle stand.

Mantel clock, ca. 1830. Historic Huguenot Street Permanent Collection, Gift of Emily DuBois Hoysradt, 11479-83. This pillar-and-scroll shelf clock was made ca. 1830 by Eli Terry & Sons of Plymouth, CT. The clock’s original owner is said to have been Josiah Bruyn DuBois, Emily’s great-grandfather.

Interior with melodeon, n.d. Oil on canvas. Historic Huguenot Street Permanent Collection, Gift of the artist. This interior scene depicts a 19th-century melodeon piano, which the artist also donated to Historic Huguenot Street.
