The men of Troop B, 1st Cavalry of the First Provisional Regiment of the New York Guard first billeted in tents at the end of Pine Road.
They later built barracks, a mess hall, and officer's quarters at the intersection of the water supply tunnel and Mountain Rest Road, to the west of the village of New Paltz. They named their camp Camp Fort Orange.
