What are Woven Coverlets?
The term coverlet means a woven bed covering (in early inventories the word is sometimes spelled “coverlid”). Coverlets were used as blankets on the best beds in rural households. They were practical necessities-warm in winter—but decorative as well. They were meant to be seen, admired, and sometimes read.
What is Weaving?
Weaving is a binary process that, as its most basic, involves the crossing of vertical yarns with horizontal yarns. The horizontal yarns (the weft threads) go either over or under the vertical yarns (the warp threads) in a set pattern or sequence that generates a design. The tool operated by the weaver to produce a woven object is called a loom.
